504 vs IEP Path-Finder

Two short questions to help you figure out whether to pursue a 504 plan or an IEP for your child, and what to do next. It's a starting point for the conversation with your school, not a decision the tool (or you) makes alone.

How to read the result

  • 504 plan = accommodations so your child can access school equally (rest after seizures, make-up work, testing flexibility, trained staff). For students whose learning is on track.
  • IEP = specially designed instruction under IDEA (epilepsy fits "Other Health Impairment"), for when learning is affected and the child needs specialized teaching. Every IEP also includes 504 protections.
  • Either way, the next step is the same: request an evaluation in writing. The school team determines eligibility with you, and epilepsy qualifies even when well controlled.

Full detail is in Chapter 7: Your Child's Rights.

Informational only, not legal advice. Only the school's evaluation team can determine which plan your child is eligible for.
