1. What do the three S's stand for?
Stay (and time the seizure), keep them Safe, turn them on their Side.
2. Should you put something in the person's mouth to stop them biting their tongue?
No, never. It can cause injury or choking. You cannot swallow your tongue.
3. How long does a convulsive seizure last before you should call 911?
Longer than 5 minutes (or sooner if the student's action plan says so, if breathing is affected, if seizures repeat, if it happens in water, or if there is injury).
4. Why turn the person onto their side?
To help them breathe and let saliva drain.
5. A student has a seizure action plan on file that says call 911 at 3 minutes. Which rule do you follow?
The student's plan. An individual plan written by their provider takes priority over the general 5-minute guideline.
6. List two things you should NOT do.
Any two: put something in the mouth; restrain/hold them down; give food or water before they are alert; leave them alone before recovery.
